Alumni Art Exhibition: Beth Robinson: Where Do We Go From Here?

This June at Sideshow Gallery Portland, four artists come together to present work based on a common interest in working with materials and concepts at hand. Together they are questioning life, taking stock in their surroundings, and forging ahead with a combination of both camaraderie and bootstrap ethic.

Beth Robinson is a book artist and storyteller. Her visual metaphors have a playful poignancy. “I have felt that many where disheartened by the actions of the pervious administration, causing a questioning of our personal and national culture and identity. The title “where do we go from here?“ inspired me to create a small collection of realizations and tools to move forward.

Show runs June 4th- June 14th Hours 1-5

Beth Robinson will give an artist talk on June 12th @ 6 pm.

Where Do We Go From Here?

This June at SideShow gallery Portland , four artists come together to present work based on a common interest in working with materials and concepts at hand. Together they are questioning life, taking stock in their surroundings, and forging ahead with a combination of both camaraderie and bootstrap ethic.

Tracy Taylor Nehrling is a Portland – based fibers artist and painter. Her weavings are colorful and contemplative. “Weaving acts as a metaphor for slowing down and being in the present moment.  The majority of decisions are made in this moment, creating spontaneous works based on trust and intuition.”  Beth Robinson is a book artist and storyteller. Her visual metaphors have a playful poignancy. “I have felt that many where disheartened by the actions of the pervious administration, causing a questioning of our personal and national culture and identity. The title “where do we go from here?“ inspired me to create a small collection of realizations and tools to move forward. “ Working in tandem, Brianna Cross and Cyan Bott are cooking up a site specific installation. “The contents of the home, re-contextualized, for your viewing pleasure- and the constant irrational juxtaposition of things in the urban environment”

Opening June 4th, 2009 6-8 pm.
Beth Robinson will give an artist talk on June 12th @ 6 pm.

Oppertunity to Display Artwork

Corporate Environments is a provider of workplace solutions. We have recently redone our showroom (and we’re also about to finish a new website and branding… so don’t let our 20 yr old webpage discourage anyone!) and are in need of some artwork to put on our walls. As a Knoll dealer, we provide a range of furniture, from Mies Van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair to the workspaces at the adidas and Les Schwab headquarters. Architects and Designers are in our showroom regularly, as well as heads of Fortune 500 companies, and every day people who have a love of modern design.

We are incredibly committed to supporting our community as well as the environment. We keep this in mind when choosing who to partner with on any project. For our artwork, Oregon College of Arts and Crafts came into mind because of its wide range of studies in Fine Art. As a furniture (and textiles!) dealer, we connect with any designer that combines form and function. As designers, we also love the use of unconventional materials used in a conventional way or vice versa. I think the student artwork at OCAC meshes quite well with our company culture.

Anything that can hang on the wall works, plus I’d love to show some student-made furniture as well! June 25th is the potential date of our open house. We’ll be having a large party here, which includes our clients and the design community. It would be great if we could work on display by then, and it would be a great opportunity to show the students’ work to a large group of interested people!

Let me know if anyone would like to a part of it and we can work out the details. Thanks so much.

May 2009 Construction Update

Drawing, Painting & Photography Building Update

Construction of the Drawing, Painting, and Photography building (DPP) and adjacent Student Thesis Studio is well underway and slated for completion in October 2009. The two-story DPP building is 14,941 square feet and includes 6,240 square feet of drawing and painting studios. The floor dedicated to photography features 5,645 square feet of studio space as well as five film developing stations and three darkrooms. Expandable classrooms capable of holding up to 200 people provides much needed space for lectures and an alternate location for Art Adventures children’s programs during inclement weather.

We appreciate our beautiful campus setting and are on track to achieve LEED silver certification with our building project. Sustainable design has been a critical criterion in the development of the DPP studio and Thesis buildings. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED is a voluntary third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Building commissioning is an essential step in the design and construction quality assurance process. For any project to be certified, LEED requires basing commissioning procedures. The College has retained Interface Engineering to provide commissioning services. Being LEED commissioned validates the LEED scorecard and assures the building operation is in accordance with design.

LEED Performance criteria developed by the US Green Building Council:
• Improve the energy efficiency of the buildings and limit their environmental impact. • LEED Green Building Rating System is voluntary. • LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in 5 key areas:

Sustainable Site Development • Water quality will be provided using storm filter cartridges • Storm water runoff will be collected in a retention pond to minimize storm water leaving the site after development • Climate tolerant plantings to minimize amount of irrigation

Water Savings • High efficiency plumbing fixtures

Energy Efficiency • Thermally-broken windows • Improved exterior insulation and building materials • High efficiency mechanical system using Variable Volume Refrigerant system

Materials Selection • Construction waste will be recycled • Specifying materials with recycled content throughout the project • Materials sourced from local manufactures (within 500 miles) wherever possible. • FSC-certified wood and wood products have been specified.

Indoor Environmental Quality • Design Team has specifies sealants, paints and composite wood products that reduce indoor air contamination • Maximizing daylight to interior spaces • Light controls in each room and operable windows for natural ventilation.
