September 4th - September 27th

Opening Reception
First Friday, September 4th 6-9 pm

In their first gallery exhibition, Von Tundra looks at the layers of meaning embedded in manmade objects and spaces. The works in Further More combine simple geometry and historical ornament to unpack the duality of constructed items: pragmatic in purpose, stylish in form. By subverting the relationship between practicality and desire (structure and surface), sculptures reveal conflicting sentiments of function and beauty.

Von Tundra is a Portland-based design house specializing in the creation of contemporary furniture, fixtures, installations, and interiors. Since the group’s founding in 2007 its three members have honed an aesthetic vision that unites Modernism’s efficient lines with the warmth of familiar materials and handcrafted integrity. As both a licensed company and artist collaborative, Von Tundra pursues a range creative endeavors from client-inspired projects to conceptually focused gallery exhibitions.

Jason Charles Rens, current OCAC student, is showing “Non-jewelry,“ a series of wall-hung sculptures happened through a combination of processes and materials at NATIONALE at 2730 E Burnside in Portland. The show runs September 9-October 4, with an opening reception Saturday September 12th from 6:00-8:00PM. The sculptures utilize rope, hydro-cal, two-part marine resin, equestrian hardware, paint, and casting techniques to create unique art things which employ the language of jewelry in a new context. The resulting compositions took form under conscious meditations on the topics of economy, duality, hierarchy, and decorative practices. Additionally, the unique space at NATIONALE, which combines the boutique and gallery into a modern hybrid environment, became essential to the presentation of the collection. Hours: Wed-Sun, 1:00-7:00PM

Call to artists: Oregon State Hospital Replacement: Community Project Salem, Oregon

The Oregon Arts Commission is pleased to announce a new opportunity for public artists.

Oregon State Hospital Replacement: Community Project Salem, Oregon

The Oregon Arts Commission (“Commission”) is seeking artists interested in creating site-specific works of art that involve the patient community for the Oregon State Hospital Replacement Project. The Oregon State Hospital, which is a part of the Department of Human Services, is a significant, state-of-the-art healing facility located in Salem, Oregon.

For more than 120 years the Oregon State Hospital has been Oregon’s primary mental health facility. Located on a vast 144 acre campus, the current facility has approximately 60 buildings built from 1883 to the mid-1950s. It is notable as the location for the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

As indicated, this invitation to artists is only for an artistic project which involves the patient community (referred to as “consumers of mental health services” or “consumers”) as significant collaborators. The artist may involve the patient community in the content, the making, or the ongoing evolution of the work. The commissioned project should add to the vibrant healing environment of the hospital and reflect the diversity of the consumers and staff. Interested artists should note that, due to the nature of this facility, there will be significant concerns for durability of materials and patient/staff safety. An artist’s past experience working with diverse communities will be carefully considered. The artwork must be durable, unbreakable, touchable when possible, and considerate of the specific needs of the consumers in the portion of the new hospital facility the work will be located.

Budget: The total budget for artwork for this project exceeds $1.3 million. This budget will be divided between multiple contracts. Applicants must indicate a minimum budget requirement for consideration in a cover letter to application materials.

Deadline: Complete applications must be received in the Oregon Arts Commission office no later than 5pm Friday, September 4, 2009.

Note: While referred to as an RFP, requirements to apply do not include a specific design proposal.

Kimo Nelson (Drawing/Painting ’09) showed “Canyon Musings” at Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City, UT in July. Kimo Nelson splits his time between Portland, Oregon and the Colorado Plateau in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. He completed a BA in Environmental Studies and studied painting at Lewis & Clark College and received a Post - Baccalaureate certificate in drawing and painting from OCAC. For the past 15 years, he has spent his summers working as a river guide with Colorado River & Trail Expedition, an experience that has had a profound effect on his art and left him with the belief that “the landscape of the Colorado Plateau is a place that strains perception and comprehension. Confronting this place can illicit a mixture of awe, disbelief, and fear. It is not surprising that many who encounter these spaces feel themselves challenged, awakened, or simply at peace. Call it what you will, an encounter with the sublime, a religious experience, or a spiritual connection, no one sees these places and leaves unchanged. Anyone who experiences this connection, be it to this landscape or any other, will decide for themselves how best to understand it. As an artist I explore this connection through the spaces I paint.“

Shauna Oster (‘09) and Patricia Patino (‘09) showed work in the “Recent Graduates” exhibition at Blackfish Gallery in Portland in July.

Amy Baker (Fibers (‘09), showed new work at Monochrome Gallery in Portland in July.
