Kimo Nelson (Drawing/Painting ’09) showed “Canyon Musings” at Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City, UT in July. Kimo Nelson splits his time between Portland, Oregon and the Colorado Plateau in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. He completed a BA in Environmental Studies and studied painting at Lewis & Clark College and received a Post - Baccalaureate certificate in drawing and painting from OCAC. For the past 15 years, he has spent his summers working as a river guide with Colorado River & Trail Expedition, an experience that has had a profound effect on his art and left him with the belief that “the landscape of the Colorado Plateau is a place that strains perception and comprehension. Confronting this place can illicit a mixture of awe, disbelief, and fear. It is not surprising that many who encounter these spaces feel themselves challenged, awakened, or simply at peace. Call it what you will, an encounter with the sublime, a religious experience, or a spiritual connection, no one sees these places and leaves unchanged. Anyone who experiences this connection, be it to this landscape or any other, will decide for themselves how best to understand it. As an artist I explore this connection through the spaces I paint.“
