June at SideShow gallery Portland: Where Do We Go From Here?

Where Do We Go From Here?

This June at SideShow gallery Portland , four artists come together to present work based on a common interest in working with materials and concepts at hand. Together they are questioning life, taking stock in their surroundings, and forging ahead with a combination of both camaraderie and bootstrap ethic.

Tracy Taylor Nehrling is a Portland – based fibers artist and painter. Her weavings are colorful and contemplative. “Weaving acts as a metaphor for slowing down and being in the present moment.  The majority of decisions are made in this moment, creating spontaneous works based on trust and intuition.”  Beth Robinson is a book artist and storyteller. Her visual metaphors have a playful poignancy. “I have felt that many where disheartened by the actions of the pervious administration, causing a questioning of our personal and national culture and identity. The title “where do we go from here?“ inspired me to create a small collection of realizations and tools to move forward. “ Working in tandem, Brianna Cross and Cyan Bott are cooking up a site specific installation. “The contents of the home, re-contextualized, for your viewing pleasure- and the constant irrational juxtaposition of things in the urban environment”

Opening June 4th, 2009 6-8 pm.
Beth Robinson will give an artist talk on June 12th @ 6 pm.

Faculty News :: May 2009

Heidi Schwegler, Metals faculty, has a solo show this month at the Hallie Ford Museum in Salem. Her new installation will be on display May 23-July 19 in the Study Gallery. The installation will include a range of sculptural objects, prints and film that focus on “a moment of anguish.” The title of the Schwegler’s installation, “Slipping Underwater,” refers to a phrase that is often used when a person is about to drown. It is quiet and beautiful and says nothing of the horrible struggle and anguish that occurs just before the person slips underwater. For the artist, it is very similar to personal anguish.

Christine Eagon, Studio School instructor, is showing “Christine Eagon & Felix: 1990-2009, Travel Photos with a Feline Twist,“ at Angst Gallery in Vancouver, WA. Christine literally let a stuffed animal cat out of her camera bag, and photographed him visiting ancient standing stones, next to classic gargoyles, totem poles, frolicking amongst frogs, or relaxing on a Scrabble board in her studio. The show runs through May 30, with a gallery talk and slide show on Wednesday May 13, 2009 at 7:00PM.

Micki Skudlarczyk, past Artist-in-Residence and Studio School instructor, is showing “Well Finished,“ a mixed media installation May 1-31 at Launch Pad Gallery in Portland. “Well Finished” investigates the artist’s philosophical and emotional struggle with her reverence for the animals that we eat and her dismay at the pain and fear they sometimes experience at the moment of death. In Fall 2008, Micki was awarded an artist residency the Fundacion Gruber, Jez where she developed a relationship with the small slaughter community in the village of Cholul. There, she experienced the process of animal slaughter first hand, from start to finish. An opening reception for the show takes place on Friday, May 1 from 6:00PM-midnight. Micki will also give a slide lecture and artist talk on May 31 at 1:00PM.

Parallel Worlds:  Art of the Ainu of Hokkaido and Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest
June 6-28

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Portland-Sapporo Sister City Association, this exhibition is believed to be the first exhibition of its kind to compare the extraordinary textile art of indigenous people of North America and Japan . Parallel Worlds offers a rare opportunity to view exquisitely designed traditional Attush and Ruunpe ceremonial robes from Ainu artists of Hokkaido , opposite stunningly woven Ravenstail and Chilkat robes by Native American artists of the Pacific Northwest . Parallel Worlds is the second of three exhibitions in our popular 2009 Art in the Garden series. In February, we showcased the fine calligraphy by Yasuyoshi Fujii and his Meito Shodo Kai School of Calligraphy. The final presentation in the series occurs in November with the introduction of new works of art in the form of Bontei tray gardens by Marc Peter Keane, landscape architect and noted author of Japanese Garden Design.

OCAC alumni Brennan Conaway, Matt McCalmont and Charissa Niles, are showing “Out of Place,“ an exhibition by nowhere arts collective February 28-March 28 at Disjecta in Portland. ‘Out of Place’ is an exhibition of work created during Nowhere’s residency at the Center for Land Use Interpretation in the summer of 2008. The CLUI facility is located on the Nevada/Utah border in the small town of Wendover. Nowhere traveled extensively in this arid region, “gradually understanding that the desert is not empty, but full of life and rich with history.“ In Out of Place, they bring these observations to Disjecta’s main exhibition space and explore the fact and folklore of the American West. Matt McCalmont modified a small motorcycle, making it possible to take a solo journey and record the rough surfaces of his travels. Brennan Conaway produced the film ‘Trajectory’ that documents a ‘weapons test’ in the desert, where he fired a bullet at the distant horizon and then went searching for it. Charissa Niles discovered an abandoned railway and is ‘reclaiming’ the tracks to convey hand-built vehicles that don’t require fossil fuels.  Founded in 2005, Nowhere is an art collective based in Portland, Oregon. http://www.disjecta.org/events/outofplace.php
