VSA arts and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., Announce “Accelerate” Call for Entries

Deadline:  June 19, 2009 (midnight, MST)

VSA arts, under generous sponsorship from Volkswagen Group of America,
Inc., launched the eighth call for entries to identify emerging artists
with disabilities, ages 16-25, who demonstrate promise in the visual
arts.  The call, entitled “Accelerate” encourages artists to consider
the source of their artistic motivations and how disability might shape
the creative process.  Art must be an original work that has been
completed in the last three (3) years.  Eligible media include, but are
not limited to paintings and drawings (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pencil
or charcoal); fine art prints (lithographs, etching, intaglio, or
woodcuts); photography; sculpture; computer generated prints; digital
art; and time-based media (video, film). Two-dimensional artwork should
not exceed 60 inches in either direction. Sculpture should not exceed 24
inches in any direction.

Fifteen (15) finalists will be awarded a total of $60,000 during an
awards ceremony on Capitol Hill. Selected artwork will be displayed in a
nationwide touring exhibition that will debut at the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington, D.C., from September 10, 2009-January 6,
2010.

Each affiliate will soon receive a packet of calls to distribute to

I’ve written a book geared to the age 50+ homeowner and plan to publish it next year; looking for someone to illustrate it. Realize your school doesn’t specialize in illustration, but perhaps someone knows someone who may be interested in talking with me.  The illustrations needed are 40-50 photo-realistic illustrations. Metro Portland Artists wanted in all media to open their studios to the public on October 10 & 11 for studios east of the Willamette River and October 17 & 18 for westside studios.  Artists may choose to be open both weekends.  There are many advantages to being a Portland Open Studios artist. It is an opportunity for artists to show their art processes, sell their artwork, build an audience and communicate with the public. Artists who are selected for the event by a panel of three art professionals in a blind jury will have an image of their artwork published in the Tour Guide and on the web.
Special Scholarship Opportunity for artists between 20 and 30 years old: Kimberly Gales Emerging Artists Scholarship to Portland Open Studios. The recipient will have all fees waived and receive a $100 stipend.

Third Annual Inventors Showcase, World Trade Center

One of the most innovative inventor groups in the country will be hosting it’s Third Annual Inventors Showcase On May 30th, 2009 at the World Trade Center in downtown Portland .  MIPO, The Micro-enterprise Inventor’s Program of Oregon, would like to invite you, your students, and anyone you know within your organization to participate.  At MIPO we work with inventors everyday - and what we see is people who recognize a problem or a challenge, and create solutions.  We believe that innovation, problem solving and overcoming challenges are innate and fundamental core competencies for every inventor.  With our showcase, we offer all inventors, with all levels of experience, to join together and show us what you’ve got!

The theme for the 2009 Showcase is “Innovation Begins At Home.“ this year and will be awarding prizes in several categories! 

·      “In the Kitchen” for all the women out there who create solutions “What’s cooking in your Kitchen??“

·      “In the Garage” for all the men out there who find answers to problems—Waffle Iron, anyone?

·      “In the Playroom” for all the kids and teens under age 18 who are already inventing

·      “In the Greenhouse” for all of you who are focused on sustainability, environmental and energy issues, and all things green!!

We understand that not all women spend their days in the kitchen, and that not all men enjoy tools! We simply want to encourage everyone to participate and by creating categories, we are better able to serve a larger population, and—give away more prizes!!  The event will feature a “Best Oregon Invention” contest, which will be voted on during the event by the general public and attendees.  Prizes awarded will be designed to help the winners move further ahead in developing their inventions, including an often sought- after financial component!  The event is open to the public and will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will include many opportunities to provide resources and opportunities including:

Rockefeller Foundation Accepting Applications for Bellagio Center Creative Arts Residencies

The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center creative arts residencies are deisgned to give composers, novelists, playwrights, poets, video/filmmakers, and visual artists time for disciplined work, individual reflection, and collegial engagement free of the usual interruptions of professional and personal life.

Located on a peninsula adjacent to Lake Como, two hours north of Milan, the Bellagio Center typically offers one-month stays for no more than three to five creative artists at a time. The foundation seeks applicants from any country in the world who are able to demonstrate a history of significant achievement in their respective artistic disciplines. Individuals from developing countries and young artists with significant accomplishments — exhibitions, publications, performances — are particularly encouraged to apply. Decisions are based on the quality of the proposed project, the ability of the applicant to articulate the project’s purpose and goals, the professional qualifications and achievements of the applicant, and the suitability and value of the center for the proposed activity. Spouses/life partners may accompany the resident, or may apply for a concurrent residency. The center also offers collaborative residencies for two to four persons working on the same project.

Residencies are typically four weeks long; however, shorter periods may be available. Room and board are provided without charge to all residents and their spouses/partners. Residents and spouses/partners must pay for their own airfare and local transportation to/from Bellagio. Assistance with round-trip economy airfare between the home country and Milan is available on a financial-needs basis to qualifying residents and their spouses/partners from developing countries.

The February 11, 2009, deadline is for a possible residency occurring between mid-August through November 26, 2009.

Description:
The Art Department at St. Cloud State University seeks a vibrant and dedicated individual to teach photography and media-related courses in a progressive interdisciplinary-oriented department. St. Cloud State University is a comprehensive university of approximately 15000 students and is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Kiehle Visual Arts Center sits on the banks of the Mississippi River, sixty miles north of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Responsibilities:
Teach three studio courses (18 contact hours) per semester (six courses per year) in photography as well as special topics, foundation courses, intermediate courses in critical frameworks and combined studio, or advanced multi-disciplinary courses, depending on department need. The successful applicant will contribute to BA, BS and BFA programs including a developing emphasis in integrated media.  S/he will work together with others teaching in existing video, digital and performance media and will transition the department from wet-based to primarily digital photography.
Consequently, candidates with the ability to teach both traditional and digital photographic methods and to work in alternative photo processes are preferred. The successful candidate should be informed of critical theory and interdisciplinary approaches to art-making, and be knowledgeable about current practices in contemporary art.  In order to be considered for tenure, the successful candidate will demonstrate ability to teach effectively, to produce a record of scholarly or creative achievement or research, to engage in ongoing preparation and study, to contribute to student growth and development, and to provide service to the university and community.

Qualifications: MFA in Photography or related area is required at time of appointment.
The eligible candidate must be a practicing artist and show a record of successful professional activity. Previous teaching experience at the college level, including teaching assistantships, is preferred. The successful candidate must be able to teach in a Macintosh environment and will have demonstrated the ability to teach and work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds.

January 6, 2009, Salem OR - Applications are now being accepted for Salem Art Association’s (SAA) 60th Annual Salem Art Fair & Festival held July 17, 18 and 19, 2009. Recognized as one of the west coast’s major cultural events, SAA’s annual Salem Art Fair & Festival is a lively three-day celebration that draws more than 100,000 visitors each year. Held in picturesque Bush’s Pasture Park, this event is the primary fundraiser for Salem Art Association and provides revenue to more than 60 community nonprofits and 200 visual artists.  SAA, one of Oregon’s largest nonprofit community arts organizations, operates the Bush House Museum, three galleries in the Bush Barn Art Center, and a wide range of Community Arts Education and School Programs that reach 10,000 school children each year. Visual Artists - SAA is accepting applications from visual artists who wish to sell their work in the Salem Art Fair & Festival’s Artist Marketplace. Fine art and craftspeople who work in any media are invited to apply. Two hundred artists will be selected by a jury process. Performance Artists - SAA is accepting applications from performing artists. All genres of high-quality music, theater and novelty performances are invited to apply.  Approximately 50 performing artists will be determined by jury for the Main Stage and the Family Stage. Artisan Guilds or Groups - Folk artists or artisan guilds and groups that would like to demonstrate their work may apply to be a part of Artisan Village. Local Nonprofits for Kids Court - SAA is accepting applications from educational organizations interested in leading Kids Court activities during the 2009 Salem Art Fair & Festival. All educational groups are invited to apply.
Selected groups will direct and staff an art activity booth during the three-day Festival. In past years activities have ranged from face-painting and button-making to newspaper hats and decorative picture frames. Funds earned from ticket sales will go back to the organization running the activity booths.

This is also an opportunity for organizations to raise their visibility among the more than 100,000 visitors expected to attend the 2008 Salem Art Fair & Festival. Nonprofit Arts and Arts-Related Organizations for Cultural Corridor - Nonprofit arts and arts-related organizations are invited to apply to be a part of Cultural Corridor. Founded in 1919, the Salem Art Association (SAA) is one of the largest and oldest community arts organizations in Oregon. SAA operates the Bush House Museum and the Bush Barn Art Center and Annex in historic Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem.

The Bush House Museum, an Italianate mansion containing an extensive collection of 19th century fine and decorative arts, is the former residence of pioneer businessman Asahel Bush II and his family.  The Bush Barn Art Center is home to three galleries run by SAA: the A.N. Bush Gallery and the Focus Gallery, both contemporary exhibition spaces, and the Camas Gallery, a sales gallery featuring Northwest arts and fine crafts. SAA also runs an extensive Community Arts Education program which provides art instruction to students in regional public schools and community arts classes for children and adults.

MATERIAL AFTERLIFE:  Call for Proposals

As a part of an ongoing commitment to promote challenging and innovative practices in the visual arts, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) is seeking artists to submit entries to Material Afterlife, a national juried exhibition of recycled and cycle–logic art. The exhibition demonstrates the growing relevance of artwork that examines environmental degradation, consumerism, personal value, and frugality, as well as celebrates the significance of recycling, sustainable methods, and thrift-store culture as medium and subject matter for artists. This exhibition explores the rich terrain developed by artists who address waste and need in society, are mindful of environmental cause and effect, and expand ideas of consumption through a cyclic approach of material use. This terrain has never been more fruitful than with the work of today’s artists. Material Afterlife demonstrates the influence of ecology in contemporary art practice and discourse, as well as its affect on the essential substantive qualities of eco-art.
