Colleen Flanigan (’97)  is returning to Bali this month with intention to create another ocean sculpture at “Karang Lestari” with Celia Gregory (http://www.theMarineFoundation.org) and the Pemuteran community (http://www.biorockbali.webs.com).  The project is intended to help the oceans by using creative and technical skills to build a colorful, vital marine habitat where it has been destroyed.  Colleen will be joined by Jodi Lomask, Artistic Director of the San Francisco-based organization http://www.Capacitor.org to begin a touring ocean production—an interdisciplinary exhibit bringing together performance, art, science and action to raise awareness and motivate healthy relationships with the ocean. The Global Coral Reef Alliance (http://www.globalcoral.org) certified Colleen in their Biorock technology in 2004.Colleen has also been awarded one of the TED Senior Fellows. The TED Senior Fellows program is an extended, three-year fellowship awarded to 20 individuals from the disciplines of arts, science, entrepreneurship, the NGO sector and education. Senior Fellows are selected from the previous year’s class of TED Fellows. Over the course of their Senior Fellowships, the Senior Fellows will work on projects within their individual disciplines. www.ted.com

Hilary Pfeifer (’99) spent the summer creating a 1000 piece installation for the home of Pixar director Lee Unkrich. Her ‘sWarm installation was included in the book 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse by Garth Johnson, Quarry Press, 2009.  

Triage Wines, a wine importer and distributor working in Washington & Oregon, is hosting an art competition to find 5 artists in the Seattle and Portland areas to design and paint the company’s delivery vans.  Triage specializes in natural, organic, and biodynamic wines from traditional European and European-inspired producers. “The company is looking for artists to help the company express the portfolio’s specific focus in an artistic and memorable way, said Triage’s Marketing Director, David Baer. “While our logo is lovely and all, we want people to know that our business is about promoting natural wines, often farmed by organic or biodynamic methods, which are hand made and express the heritage and specificity of the place from which they come.  The logo simply doesn’t say all of that - but we think there are some wine-loving masterful artists out there who can!“
Interested artists can apply to design and paint one of five vans, transforming it into mobile art.  In addition to having their work selected, each artist will win $350 worth of wine from the Triage portfolio and will receive a $100 stipend toward materials. Interested artists can submit sketches via email to .  All applicants must include their name and phone number as well.  Only applicants in the Seattle and Portland metro areas will be considered.  Entries must be received no later than March 15, 2010, and work will take place between April and September 2010.

1.  The ouside energy efficient mechanical units have been set into place for the Drawing, Painting and Photography (DPP) building and Thesis building.

2.  The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) consultant ha been brought on board to make our application to the Green Building Council.

3. Sidewalk work has moved forward with structural excavation and fill and recently the ouring of curbs & concrete sidewalks on Barnes and Leahy Rd.

4.  One half the concrete entrance and divider island has been excavated and poured at the main entrance.

5.  The cedar fence has been installed along the South property line of the lower parking lot to screen a joining residences.

6.  Landscaping planting materials are being installed at the lower parking lot

7.  Fire treated cedar soffits are being installed at covered walkways on the East side of the DPP building.

8.  Siding work is substantially underway on the DPP building now that the wall sheathing and air-barrier system are installed

9.  The concrete tetaining wall between the Centrum and DPP Bldg. is now pour and the sidewalks adjoining the Centrum Bldg. are set up for a concrete pour in the next week.

10. Welding work for structural upgrades to the glazing system required by Washington County are now completed.

11.  Metal frame work for the commercial glass window system are now substanitally in place, ready for the insulated glass to be measured and fabricated.

12.  Metal framing for the concealed window roller shades are now completed.

13.  Ceilng framing is substantilly complete in the Thesis Bldg, ready for finishes to begin shortly.

14.  Electrical panels have been set at both buildings in preparation for PGE to bring electrical power connection to both buildings.

15.  Electrical conduits, wiring, light fixtures and devices are being roughed-in.

Colleen Flanigan (‘97) received a RACC Artistic Focus Grant to complete Slideways, an interactive work to be exhibited at good: a gallery later this year. Also, she just returned from a creative R&D adventure in Bali with choreographer, Jodi Lomask, of SF-Based Capacitor.org.  Together they are developing a performance, art, sci exhibit to raise awareness and activate healthy human-ocean relationships.  Colleen is a Senior TED Fellow 2010-2012. colleenflanigan.com

Brian Crane, ‘07, has been awarded an OCAC Faculty Senior Residency for the summer of 2010.  Crane will experiment with carving solid wood forms inspired by asteroids and will create a series of sculptures based on these organic orphans abandoned during the creation of the universe. He will manipulate their stylized, abstract story through shapes caused by cataclysmic events and layers of texture due to cosmic attrition.

Kristin Mitsu Shiga (’01) will be featured on Oregon ArtBeat on OPB television.  The show will air on Thursday, February 18 at 8PM, or can be downloaded at http://www.opb.org after that date.

Jennifer J MacLean ‘09 Painting, has an upcoming show on February 6th at Local Color Art Gallery in Seattle, featuring her “Spirited Creations” line of  jewelry. She has been commissioned to paint a large painting from her “Chaos and Order” series.  She has sold various pieces from that collection and received accolades from a local art critic regarding her work. Jennifer’s creativity has a new home - - she just opened a studio in the artsy area of Fremont in Seattle. This is where she paints and teaches private art and creativity classes.

Nicole Gibbs will be giving the lecture on Wednesday, February 10 at 7 pm.  There will be a reception (otherwise known as a “dessert potluck” around here!) to follow. She anticipates the lecture to last about 90 minutes.  It will be held in the sanctuary at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, and she will show slides of her work.  St. Andrew is close to OCAC, just south of highway 26 between Cedar Hills Blvd and Murray Blvd on Butner Road.

Last year, the wood students of Oregon College of Art and Craft sent quarter-scale stepladder parts, with no instructions or rules, to artist/craftspeople all over Canada and the United States. Incredible results have been coming back to Portland in all shapes and sizes. Come join us for the celebration of these creations and the launch of our online fundraising auction. Ladder pieces have been sent in from students, faculty, and such established artists as Garry Knox Bennett, Arthur Ganson, Michael Hosaluk, Stephen Hogbin and more.

I work for a non-profit affordable housing organization called Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives, Inc. (PCRI http://www.pcrihome.org) who’s mission is to preserve, expand and manage affordable housing in the City of Portland and provide access to and advocacy for services for our residents.

I manage a small community center in one of PCRI’s apartment complexes called Park Terrace Community Center in North Portland right off of Alberta St.  The center is a drop-in center that provides residents with community resources (information and referral) as well as weekly programs/classes ranging from exercise to after school tutoring.  The majority of our residents are over the age of 55 but we also have a small immigrant population and a few children.

I am currently looking for a few artists who are willing to volunteer either on a one-time basis or ongoing if they desire at the community center teaching arts and crafts.  I am interested in doing a wide variety of projects including painting, clay, fiber crafts, basket-making, and am open to other suggestions.  I am also very flexible with days and times and can pay for the supplies (up to a reasonable amount) as well as provide a small travel allowance.
