Arthur De Bow, OCAC Director of Exhibitions & Alumni Affairs, was chosen as a juror for the 2012 NICHE Awards competition for American and Canadian makers of fine craft. Finalists will be announced in late November 2011, and will be invited to display their work in a special exhibit at the Buyers Market of American Craft trade show of contemporary artisan-made products for home and fashion in February 2012 in Philadelphia, PA. Interior Margins was born around a dinner table in May 2010, when eight women artists gathered to converse about painting and abstraction with Lumber Room founder Sarah Miller Meigs and Reed College curator Stephanie Snyder, within the Lumber Room’s inaugural installation by San Francisco artist Leonie Guyer. The ideas discussed that evening catalyzed the desire for a further exhibition, one bringing together the work of an intergenerational group of Northwest women artists who are transforming the diverse legacies and practices of abstraction for a new era. Former OCAC and ACD student David Boekelheide ’11 designed and built these bike racks lining the entrance of Eco-Flats.The New York Times recently printed an article citing the energy that Portland developers have put into creating urban infrastructure which supports heavy bike-reliance. This includes everything from extensive bike lanes, to city-wide bike corrals, to housing that specifically caters to bikers. ACD mentor Jean-Pierre Viellet’s Eco-Flats are mentioned as being a premier example of a “bike building,” where there is ample space for bike storage (30 bike racks for 18 rentable units), but no parking for cars. Recent graduate David Boekelheide ’11 designed and constructed the bike rack for Eco-Flats, which can be seen in the above photo, as well as in the Times article. Carla Klinker Cope is now on the Board of Directors for Bunnell Street Arts Center in Homer Alaska. Peggy Harkins has had a busy summer and fall season working on her art. She say about her work: You may have noticed that ruffles seem to be on every fashion this year. They have always been one of my favorite embellishments to clothing and I find myself wearing them whenever I feel the need to be “girlie”.  So why just leave ruffles to clothing and potato chips? Why not include them on a hand sculpted, carved and painted box? Yes, that is how I spend a great number of hours this summer, working towards perfecting the wooden ruffle! The effort was worth it and I have incorporated it into a clock called “ Girl Time” as time is the theme for the upcoming local 14 show.  The piece will be featured with a collection of time related art in several places throughout the show. Image: Ryan Pierce This summer Ryan Pierce has had a whirlwind of action, opportunity, and change, below is a quick recap, a couple of links, and a plea for support. June: Amy, Daniela Molnar, and myself led ten intrepid artists on a Signal Fire retreat through the ancient forests of Opal Creek Wilderness. We spent a week camping amidst some of Cascadia’s most pristine waters, with some of my favorite people ever. July: I collaborated with 15 students from Portland Community College on my first public art piece, a mammoth landscape painting for the grounds of PCC Sylvania, to be installed this fall. Then, Amy and I ran the third season of Outpost, along the Upper Clackamas near Mt. Hood. We witnessed some amazing artists generate an improvised drum set, stump glamor shots, and a quilt of dead leaves, among other things… August: My work was featured in Elizabeth Leach Gallery’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition, and I was off in Scandinavia, traveling first in Finland, Sweden, and Estonia, and then in residence at Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder in Norway. Photos from the resulting show, Night Music, at Babel Gallery are available here alongside a text by a Norwegian art historian. After the opening I spent a week in Iceland, better known as the land of sheep and honey, and returned to my new home in Eastern Oregon. It’s beautiful here, and I’d like to share it with others, hence a brand new Signal Fire program called Winter Wren. We are in the final days of the Kickstarter Campaign to fund Leaf Litter, an annual publication that shows off the work of our amazing residents. This year we brought 19 artists to the woods and did it all out-of-pocket, making it free or at-cost to the participants. In hopes of a last-minute rally I will offer an original drawing from Night Music to anyone who pledges $300 or more before Oct 2nd. This is an $800 value. We have to reach the full amount for the campaign to be funded.  Thank you to all of you who have supported us so far (in many ways). Signal Fire is gaining momentum and Leaf Litter is not only crucial to highlight our residents, but to use at outreach. Games hand-made of wool felt, wood, canvas, and leather are not only accessible but are tactile and beautiful enough that you’ll want to keep them out where you can see them. Both familiar and unusual at the same time, some objects like the Soft Blocks have an ambiguous purpose which invite the player to arrange them absent-mindedly into pleasing configurations on the coffee table. Suzanne Lussier is halfway through her graduate school experience at the University of Montana in Missoula, studying with Beth Lo, Trey Hill and Julia Galloway, her work is becoming more sculptural and less functional.  She is now on the board of directors of NCECA (National Council for Education in Ceramic Art).  In January she completed a winter residency at Medalta Clay Center in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.  She is also working at the Missoula Clay Studio teaching adult and children’s classes. Colleen Flanigan (‘97) recently returned from Cancun, Mexico working on Living Sea Sculpture- Contemporary Art as Coral Refuge.  The large-scale Biorock sculpture will become part of Museo Subacuatico de Arte, MUSA, uniting art and ecological science. Also, Thesis student Jason Rens and post-bac Peter Williams have put in a serious amount of work on their summer off building the bar. Designer and recent MFA Applied Craft and Design graduate Selja Ojanne intuitively recognizes what many consumer experts are finding: that people seek a more meaningful connection to objects than they did in more prosperous times. In her exhibition, Games We Live With, Selja Ojanne explores a more meaningful connection to the toys and games that entertain us. “Most people store sporting equipment, toys, and games out of sight, but this collection of objects is intended to always be visible, and therefore always remembered and accessible,“ says Ojanne. Games hand-made of wool felt, wood, canvas, and leather are not only accessible but are tactile and beautiful. Both familiar and unusual at the same time, some objects like the Soft Blocks have an ambiguous purpose which invite the player to arrange them absent-mindedly into pleasing configurations on the coffee table. Others bring out a competitive nature, such as horseshoes, which is played on a colorful, woven rug-like field. Games We Live With runs August 1 - September 30 at Woonwinkel.
